MC4 Connectors Explained: Sizes, Crimping & Compatibility
What MC4 is, matching connectors to cable size, genuine vs compatible, a step-by-step crimp, and the safety rules that matter.
What an MC4 connector is
MC4 is the de-facto standard DC connector for solar. It's a weatherproof, locking male/female pair rated to IP67 or better, designed to carry panel-level DC current safely outdoors for decades. Nearly every modern panel ships with MC4-style leads, which is why the connectors and the tools to fit them are balance-of-system essentials.
Matching connectors to cable size
MC4 connectors are sized to the cable's cross-section. UK solar cable is usually 2.5mm², 4mm² or 6mm², and each needs the correct crimp barrel inside the connector for a secure, low-resistance joint. Using the wrong barrel is a common cause of hot joints and failures, so order the connector to match your cable, not the other way round.
Genuine versus compatible
The original MC4 is made by Stäubli; there are also many 'MC4-compatible' connectors on the market. Both can be perfectly good, but the important safety rule is not to mate two different brands in the same joint. Mixing brands can look fine yet make poor mechanical and electrical contact, which is exactly where connector fires start. Keep each connection brand-consistent.
How to crimp an MC4 (step by step)
- 1 Strip the solar cable to the length specified for the connector — no nicked strands.
- 2 Slide the connector housing and seal onto the cable before you crimp the metal pin.
- 3 Insert the conductor into the correct crimp barrel and crimp with a ratchet MC4 tool.
- 4 Push the pin into the housing until it clicks home, then hand-tighten the gland.
- 5 Test-mate the pair; it should lock with a positive click and not pull apart.
Safety and compliance
Solar DC can be live whenever there's daylight, so never make or break MC4 connections under load — isolate at the DC isolator first. Use a proper ratchet crimp tool rather than pliers, keep connectors the same brand throughout a joint, and fit in-line DC fuses and isolators where the system design calls for them. Done properly, an MC4 joint is as reliable as the cable itself.
